Uttoron is excited to announce the first Dha Dhin Ta Rhythms 101 Workshop, a 3 day workshop under the tutelage of Sri Kuntal Roy, a distinguished Tabla player and teacher in the Northwest. We welcome participants of all ages (6+ years), of all genders, including youth and adults. We especially encourage first-timers who want to understand the basics of Indian Rhythms, to help with their musical and dance journeys.

About Shri Kuntal Roy

Shri Kuntal Roy is the founder of Seattle Tabla School, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Indian percussion. Originally from Kolkata, he has built an international reputation as a distinguished Tabla maestro, known for his extensive repertoire that blends traditional Gharana styles with innovative rhythmic expressions. His presentations emphasize tonal clarity, precision, and the integral relationship between rhythm and melody. He received his training from legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh, as well as Shri Narayan Chandra Haldar and Shri Radha Raman Nath.

 

Rhythms 101 Workshop

Day 1: Rhythm 101 Session 1: Rhythms and Taal
  • What is rhythms and taal?
  • Basic components: Matra (beats), Vibhag (sections), Theka (basic beat pattern), Jati/Accent (subdivisions)
  • Introduction to the common taals: Teen Taal, Jhap Taal, Ek Taal, Kherwa Taal, Dadra Taal, and Rupak Taal
Session 2: Counting & Clapping Taals
  • How to count beats (hand clapping system: Sam, Khali, Tali)
  • Practice clapping along with a simple Teen Taal cycle
  • Recognizing taal (rhythmic phrases)
  • Creative exercises to practice taal
Day 2: Applications of Rhythm/Taal on your music Session 3: Playing & Reciting Basic Thekas
  • Teen Taal & Jhap Taal: Practice playing or reciting thekas
  • Introduction to Tihai (three-part rhythmic phrase)
  • Understanding how to land on Sam (first beat)
Session 4: Application to music
  • How to sing with taal?
  • How to visualize Taal in a music/song?
Day 3: Introduction to Tabla Session 5: Introduction to Tabla (first-timers specially welcome)
  • Understanding the Tabla: Dayan (right drum) & Bayan (left drum)
  • Basic hand positioning & finger techniques
  • Essential Tabla Strokes & Their Sounds: Dha, Dhin, Tin, Na, Ta, Kay, Ghe, Ga – How each stroke contributes to the taal
  • Playing composition on Tabla

Please note that a limited number of Tablas will be available for first-timers.

 

Note : Each session will be built up on earlier sessions, attending all sessions is highly encouraged for maximum benefit.
